Fall Show

Fall Show
20x16
oil on canvas
(unfinished)

I started this last week at the studio and today went in for a third session. I didn't use as limited a palette as I did in the previous post, but I did try to keep my colours pared down. I definitely understand what oil painters mean when they say they will go back in and sharpen edges after the piece has dried a bit. Today I was able to do just that, but by the end of a few hours it was all wet again... and some areas were really thick with paint, so before making more mud, I packed it in and I will continue in a week or so. For this one I am using a photo I took last fall standing with my back to the river and looking at the glorious show provided by the trees and grasses.

So my two little paintings, "Shady River" and "Over The Point" have arrived in their new home! They are cozied up by the fire in a beautiful 300 year old English cottage and the new owner even sent me two pictures to include on my blog! How fun is that? Thank you R. for making this such an enjoyable transaction!

A Bit O' News

So there has been a bit of excitement behind the scenes of this blog... I was approached, through email, by a lovely woman in the U.K. who wanted more info. about my work. In the end she wanted to purchase two small paintings (which I have posted before) that she found in my Slide Show; "Over The Point" (top) and "Shady River" (bottom). Clearly this was extremely exciting for me and certainly unanticipated. She was very patient as I scrambled to get myself set up on PayPal and, being the incredibly non-techy person that I am, I can't believe I figured it out (with only one email to my uber-techy Brother-In-Law!). I'm now good-to-go if this situation should present itself again. I mailed the package today and my little paintings are on their way to find a new home on the walls of a little 300 year old  English cottage! Too cool!

Over The Point

Over The Point
7x7"
oil on canvas
sold

This is a calmer cloud painting with a gentler atmosphere than the last few I have posted. I finished it last week and liked it when I left the studio, but while I was away from it I got thinking that maybe it was boring. So when I went back to the studio I planned to change it, but then seeing in person I liked it again and left it alone. Over the weekend, however, I went through the same thing in my mind because it is so different from my other little skies. I got thinking this one didn't have enough substance. But yesterday I got to the studio and liked it again, so I decided to leave it. Oh, the indecision! In the end, I have decided I do like it. I like it's simplicity, I like how calm it feels, I like the feel of those soft clouds rolling in over the point (of Fairy Island at Emma Lake). I like that there is colour in these clouds, but much more subdued than in the previous cloud paintings. And I like the little wispy cloud on the top left. So there you have it. It will be left as it was originally painted.

A bit of news... I am in the process of taking part in my first online challenge! I hope to post the little painting very soon, maybe in the next day or two. The subject I chose is very different for me and it is something I have been wanting to try... a portrait! But it is not what you think... and it has been a great learning exercise for me. Hopefully after a bit more tweaking this afternoon it will be ready to submit and then show to you!
