I will be doing some small pieces over the next few weeks so that I can display a full board for the open studio which, by the way, I guess I mentioned on my Facebook Fan Page, but not here. We have set the date for the Open Studio and it will be on Sunday, November 27 from 11-5, so mark your calendars if you live near or in Saskatoon.

I am calling this piece "Survivor" for a few reasons. This particular painting has a stormy feel to it and the prairies have been known to survive some incredible weather. Taking that notion further, I discovered on my son's Grade Two field trip to the Saskatoon Natural Grasslands, that this area has been through and survived three Ice Ages! Who knew?!

~~~~~***~~~~~
As an aside, I have a cute story for you... one that my dad is still laughing about. When the interpreter was telling the children about the area, she said that when the road to Silverspring neighborhood was built between the buffer zone (piece of land that leads to the river) and the grassland area that they discovered a Saber Tooth Tiger skull and a Wooly Mammoth tusk! These treasures are now on display at the University of Saskatchewan. She then said the bit about how the area has been through three ice ages. My son threw up his hand and exclaimed, "And I've seen them all!!!" He he. She stammered for a second until she realized he was talking about the movies. I love kids.
Who says movies aren't educational?!? What a great story. I can't wait to share it with my wife. :-)
I love Survivor! (Your painting, not the show.) I really like how you guide me through the composition with the values, colors and brushstrokes.
Love this painting with its strong brushstrokes and delicate colors which echoes your determination/ resilience as an artist and also translates accurately the inspiring story behind those beautiful grasslands. Assumed, simple, vibrant and so poetic just like you Nicki!
Hi Monika,
I am so happy you like this one. I have been less than thrilled with the work that I have been doing lately. I haven't had much to share, but I like this one, so I am pleased someone else does.
Your proposition intrigues me.... I love your work, too... have your people call my people!
;O)
Hi Don,
I hope Laura enjoyed the story... kids say such funny things. I wish it was easier to remember it all.
This one went through a couple of changes because at first I really did not have the brushstrokes working together; they were really fighting. I altered a few areas and it is much better. If your keen eye is properly guided, then I must have done something right!
Hi Pierre,
I think I am blushing. Your generous words have given me a much needed boost. I have been a bit down on myself and I feel uplifted that you see me and my work in the way you have described. Thank you.
This is gorgeous Nicki. I love kids too. And little boys remind me so much of my sons when they were small.
Funny.
Thanks Barbara,
It is so much fun when there are cute stories that come out of common daily activities. My sister always says to write them down, and I have to an extent, but it is hard.
Good luck with your big show!
Beautiful Nicki. I love the way you paint the prairies: the big skies, the grasslands. They say paint what you know, and these are a beautiful tribute to your landscape. And I love your sons comment : )
Kim, thanks! I really am lovin' the prairies. I just painted a huge one and I am so excited about it. I will show it next week. You will have to let me know what you think when you see it.
Tommy says lots of funny things. He is a real character.
