The Journey - The Big Commish is Done!

This was a long road, so to speak. And in a good way.

Last December I was thrilled and honoured to be asked to create a painting based on a stunning photo by professional photographer, Les Chelle. My clients had originally hoped to enlarge his photograph (with his permission) on a large scale, but the resolution of the photo didn't work for the size they wanted. At that point they approached me with the idea of painting the scene. Since I use my own resource photos for my work, I wasn't sure I would feel connected enough to someone else's photo to tackle the project. Once I saw the image however, it felt like home. A grid road under a prairie sunset was familiar, yet a welcome challenge at a size I had never tackled before.

I fully respect the fact that a photographer owns the copyright to their images, as do all artists, so I would only take on the project if Les gave his consent, and happily for my clients, he did.

What you see in this painting is my interpretation of his image, coupled with ideas from the lovely duo who had a vision for a statement piece for their home.

And they are lovely, these two people. They are lovely. When I say I was honoured to be asked to do this for them, I do not say that lightly. I was indeed honoured.

I have known him, actually, since I was a child in elementary school. He was a grade ahead of me and a friend of my older sister. After all this time he and his lovely bride found me on Facebook and have been huge supporters and advocates of my work over the last several years. Their story is beautiful.

They met around Valentine's, were engaged about two weeks later and married within six months. This is the second marriage for both of them, they each had small children when they met, and together they have a wonderful son. They have been together for seventeen years now and if ever there was a story to prove the existence of soul mates, it would be theirs.

This painting is more than just a country road to them. It symbolizes the road they are traveling together and the journey to which they have committed as partners in life. It is not perfect; it is slightly rugged and overgrown, it is beautiful and vast, it is intimate and quiet, and it is long and focused.

I am pleased to say they picked up the painting on Sunday and it has made its journey home to Alberta where I hope it brings them years upon years of joy and contemplation.

I always listen to music when I paint. This large canvas took many hours, so I heard a lot of music and lyrics during my work time. I happened to play one song quite frequently because the words suited the story of the painting; a journey of a couple going through life together. Click the link in the below title to hear the song.

"I went traveling on a road
I noticed there were flowers by the way
I bent to pick some flowers from the road
You said it's best to leave those flowers where they lay
And then I saw the roses in your smile
And lilies danced as hand in hand the miles passed by

We went traveling on the road
I noticed there were stones along the way
I bent to move the boulders from the road
You said it's best to leave those pebbles where they lay
And then I saw the patience in your smile
And hand in hand we danced as the miles passed by

We were traveling on the road
I noticed there was gold along the way
I bent to pick the treasure off the road
You said its best to leave those pennies where they lay
And then I saw the riches in your smile
And rich as kings we danced as the miles passed by

Now I'm traveling on the road
And you're no longer here to lead the way
I bent under my grief down on the road
But it's best to leave those tears where they lay
And soon I found your image in my heart
And lilies dance as step by step the miles pass by

This marks the end of my journey with this painting. I hope it is all they want it to be. And I am filled with gratitude that they trusted me to create it for them.

Two Commissions and June Sucks

two commissions underway
© Nicki Ault, 2017

I have two commissions on the go and I want them to be done by the end of June.

I am just going to take a moment to state the obvious. June is hellish. June is a panic. June is crunch time.

It is the time of the year when I always think, "Why don't I ever remember how intense June is?" I swear June is worse than December. By far. And I never remember.

The school year is winding down and there are field trips and assignments and concerts and assemblies and activities and projects and tests and no time to do it all and my husband always goes away to a conference in June and summer is coming and the kids will be home all the time and so I won't be able to get to the studio as much as I should and I have a thousand things to do but I am lucky because I will have my kids home all summer although they will suck up all my time but I love them and the time goes so fast but it goes so slow and they are teenagers so they will sleep in every day and I will feel like my time is being wasted because I could be painting but I won't be painting because I will be waiting for them to wake up and in the meantime I will be doing something stupid like the dishes and cleaning and flipping channels and getting stuck on CNN and worrying about Trump but eventually I might get to the studio for a sliver of the day but then I will have to leave because I will have to drive the kids to wherever they need to be but I love them so much that ultimately I don't mind doing it but I should have gotten more accomplished when school was in but I didn't because I always forget about June being hellish.

To be continued...

The Road

I am so excited about this! There is a whole situation that goes along with this painting! I have been asked to do a big commission for a lovely in-love couple. They are literally the cutest and their story is an inspiration. They came across a beautiful image by professional photographer Les Chelle and, with his permission, have asked me to create a large 40x60 inch canvas of the scene with my interpretation in paint! What?! It is a huge, blank canvas right now. This is going to be crazy! When it is done it will be the largest painting I have ever made... and I seriously want to knock it out of the park!

Interestingly enough, I made the assumption that it was the dramatic sky that drew them to the photo, but after a few email consultations it became clear that they had a real and personal connection to the road. For them it symbolizes the journey they are taking together through life; the path they are walking together to the days ahead. I love that and I want to do them right and their love story right by this painting.

I began prepping for this project by spending time on the weekend with the image and cropping it in slightly different ways, then printing each version out as resource. On Tuesday afternoon I sat down and did the above little study as I began to think about colour mixing for the project. I love painting to music, so I found a beautiful song in my CD collection called "The Road" by Eileen Laverty who is a local musician and Saskatchewan treasure. I made a little video for Instagram with that song playing in the background. Please go have a look if you have a moment (click the camera icon on the right-hand side of this page to get over there). The lyrics are lovely and are fitting to the sweet, gentle, supportive and committed love that this painting will represent.

"...And then I saw the roses in your smile
And lilies danced as hand in hand the miles passed by.
We went traveling on the road..."

Please stay connected and follow me on this project!

It is done and on its way! What a ride this one was! It went through many changes and that water gave me a run for my money, but I am so happy with the end result. The big commish is done! It is currently en route to Portland, Oregon! I am over the moon that my client sought me out and asked me to take on this project. He actually saw my show at the University Club last summer and contacted me in November to discuss ideas for a big painting. I think I have the best job ever in the world! ("Ever in the world" is a quote from one of my boys when he was about five.)

I listened to Norah Jones' album "Come Away With Me" over and over again while I worked on this painting. It was basically on a continuous loop. I never got tired of it; each song is magic. The mood of the music matched  my energy, my thoughts and my emotions. The process of creating this painting was a wonderful experience. I actually feel like I know myself a little better. Pretty cool gig I have.

The Big Commish

© Nicki Ault, 2017

I am working on a big commission... it is on my mind 24-7: when I am at the studio, when I am home, grocery shopping, driving my kids places and when I am at my part-time job. It is almost finished and then I will have to reveal it with bated breath to the lovely people who have asked me to create this skyscape for them. It has taken a few twists and turns- especially today when I made a few large, eleventh hour adjustments to the overall feel of the thing. Two steps forward, one step back, but at least moving in the right direction... and getting really close to the final brushstroke.
